Untold 2018 presents: Wolf Spirit

The forth chapter of Europe's best festival, Untold, continues in 2018 with a new story: Wolf Spirit - a theme where new characters are coming in to guide you towards the stages through thousands of fans.

Each Untold edition unravels a new chapter from their untold story of the Magical Land of night and magic, a Land protected by the Millennial Wizard. This year, the fans will meet new characters, that will lead them through a world of love, fight between good and bad, but they will also meet a world where man connects with nature through magic. Wolf Spirit is the fourth chapter the fans will discover on August 2nd to 5th.

The Untold Universe grows this year even more, has a even more spectacular story, which brings to us the Warrior King and the Wisdom Priestess. The Warrior King is the protector of the realm, and the strongest one on Earth. The Wisdom Priestess has the gift of fortune telling and preventing evil to take the Earth. The 2 are destined to a special bond, bond fuelled by their common force - the ability to control and harness their spiritual animal's powers: THE WOLF. Both are alpha leaders and their union allows them to summon the Wolf Spirit. Together will be the leaders of the wolf warriors and will protect the fantastic Untold realms, alongside the Dragon.

Thank to the Wolf spirit, the Mainstage will become the Wolf's Nest. The other stages will keep the fantasy real and will have their own stories too: Galaxy, Alchemy, Elements, Daydreaming, Forest, Time, Casino and Trance. All the stages hide a unique world and a unique message. Message all the fans feel alike.

To properly live this fantasy, to properly experience these 2 worlds unite for 4 days and 4 nights, Untold gathers us again in the charmed heart of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca. The participants are encouraged to involve their heart and soul into the story and free their imagination, their creativity, turning themselves for 4 days into their favourite characters. You can all create your own costume and bring them to the magical land of Untold.

In Search Of Sunrise: 14 - Mixed by Markus Schulz, Gabriel & Dresden and Andy Moor

Mkay. You’re having a decent summer. Things are fine. The weather’s playing ball (mostly), your vacation’s edging closer and you‘ve some fest tickets stashed. Something summer though ‘aint quite right and you’ve not been able to put your finger on it. We think we’ve got the answer: it’s the search for ‘In Search Of Sunrise’. Yes, that perennial starting-shot for hot-season, its categorical GO! moment has been MIA for several years and things, frankly ‘aint been right since!

Well call off the search, the Big Kahuna of all trance compilations, (the one that MIXMAG no less hailed “the greatest trance series of them all!’) is on the comeback track. And it’s had a bit of a refit!

Following the mix tenures of Tiësto and Richard Durand, series guardians Black Hole have shaken up its system and retooled the ISOS DJ dynamic. They’ve secured the services of three spinners whose credentials in the realms of sunrise soundscaping are beyond question. Markus Schulz, Gabriel & Dresden and Andy Moor have all picked up the ISOS mix mantle and have each embarked on their own forays for sunrays. Cumulatively this has resulted in an album that draws on the music of many a mainstay - Above & Beyond, Dakota, Cosmic Gate, Solarstone, Ferry Corsten, Paul Oakenfold and Aly & Fila among them. Naturally this is assimilated into much of the DJs own studioware (often exclusively) to deliver you an immaculate break-o’dawn, summer summarising soundtrack.

Advance order here: https://isos.choons.at/vol14

We’ve all been there, and many times over. That singular moment when, for the first time, the sky above the party lightens, the DJ catches its thematic thermal and you have element & music in perfect synch. There are few feelings to beat it and encapsulating that alchemy has been the unending quest of ‘In Search Of Sunrise’.

First to make his pitch is a genre polymath for whom no trance discipline is beyond mastery. Markus Schulz begins his quest with the translucent ‘Hymn of the Replicant’ - an exclusive overture born of recent studio sessions with Jam El Mar. From there it cruises on to Above & Beyond & Justine Suissa’s ‘Cold Feet’, lifts again with ‘Something About You’ (his Dakota pairing with Arkham Knights), before marking its median through Solarstone’s homage to ‘Midsummer Nights’. Travelling onwards it hypnotises with the mantra of Corsten x Oakie collab ‘A Slice Of Heaven’, before delivering new perspectives (from Johan Gielen and Elevation) on Schulz/Suissa classic ‘Perception’ and Moogwai’s ‘Viola’.

Like ISOS itself, Gabriel & Dresden have done their own fair share of rematerializing of late. Josh & Dave transition darkness to light through the likes of Naden’s epic ‘Submersion’, the ethereal vocalism of Eelke Kleijn’s ‘Home’, elegiac elegance formed by Lucas Rossi’s ‘A Part of Myself’ and Estiva’s sonorous ‘Space Dust’. Denoting daybreak, the pair brilliantly sequence a run of their own material. Their recent G&D reworks of Dirty South’s haunting ‘If It All Stops’ and Above & Beyond’s ‘Is It Love?’ prefaces their most recent single ‘Over Oceans’ and Cosmic Gate’s exceptional revision of ‘Only Road’.

Our final mixing debutante (for 2018) is Andy Moor, who begins his expedition with Paul Thomas’ chilling of Aly & Fila/Scott Bond/Charlie Walker collab ‘Shadow’. He progresses mix matters with Stoneface & Terminal’s cyanic take on Thrillseekers’ ‘In These Arms’ and Omnia’s sun channeling rework of Lange & Sarah Howells’ ‘Out Of The Sky’. Contrasting remixed anthems with classics in the making, he feeds Airbase’s lavish ‘Vermillion’, the symphonic ‘Beacon’ from Mike Saint-Jules and Andy’s Becky Jean Williams team-up ‘The Real You’ into its system. Seeing this sunrise to its ultimate zenith, he builds comp-exclusive versions of ‘Proteus’ and ‘Bioluminescence’ from Neptune Project in, before delivering its astounding coup de grace, the ‘Broken Wings’ inspired ‘Supernal’ from Supernal.

ISOS:14 is not ‘DJs delivering their “takes” or “interpretations” on the originally-modelled-by-Tiësto sound’. This is the real deal - a wholehearted connection, direct to its original vision.
‘Sunrise’ dawns again June 29.

New track: Frank Dueffel & Curtis Young - The Cartel [Vandit]

Let’s be frank, Mr. Dueffel’s back on VANDIT and after the club reception afforded ‘Adiabatic’ and follow-up ‘Wherever You Are’, we couldn’t be happr! Better yet, this time he’s brought a chum along with him!

‘The Cartel’ finds the Wesseling resident sat side-by-side in the studio with none other than Curtis Young. If that has you picturing hip-hop artiste and son of Dr. Dre, well allow us to disabuse you! It is in fact the young trance DJ & production hotshot from Belfast - a man who’s been making almost as many waves as Frank has of late.

‘The Cartel’ contrasts an elevating, optimism-fuelled soundbase against the vocal’s tenacious anti-drug polemic. With originality to burn, it squares drum romp & bass vibrancy with quick-running sub-melodies, awww inspiring (!) pad & chord motions and innovative FX. Gating up a storm in the break, its mainline synths point to the heavens to deliver its sky-bound soar.

Check ‘The Cartel’ out via the VANDIT SoundCloud here: https://soundcloud.com/vanditrecords, or cut right to the chase and stash it in you collection via Beatport here: https://www.beatport.com/release/the-cartel-extended/2293820

Mesmerizing: Exolight & Suncatcher: Siren Song [Always Alive]

I told you in an older article, these guys: Exolight & Suncatcher are not going to stop! They just released last week, on June 8th a new track called Siren Song and it is too great not to write about it. I am finding myself again looking at a blank space and trying to put my thoughts in order to write them down.

It is hard. But in the same time easy. Easy because you cannot say anything bad about it. It is that great. Easy because it gives you shivers. Easy because, like Footprints on the Moon, this track gives me that crying vibe I am always having when the melody "sees" right through me.

Needing little introduction in their own right thanks to a string of stellar productions between them, Suncatcher's sweetly sun-kissed melodies combine with Exolight's unique approach to uplifting in a sublime joint production showcasing the very best of Always Alive's current roster. An expansive, engrossing uplifter from two of Always Alive's brightest, drift off with the brilliant 'Siren Song'.

The track is magic. Mesmerizing. Luring. It really transferred me into a different world. A world where happiness is happening. A world where bad feelings are washed away. A world where no one can reach and hurts us anymore. It hypnotises us into the joy. Into the goosebumps.

I also asked them a little bit about the track:

What inspired you to do this track?

We always have a story behind our tracks. That's why they are so emotional. It's either something that happened to one of us or something that we feel when we are writing the track. Siren Song is all about that moment in your life when you finally managed to let go something that saddened you for a very long time. That last sorrowful feeling.

How did you work on it?

I started it (Exolight) and then we met in Suncatcher's studio, where we finished it.

Why did you chose Always Alive for the release? Or did the label chose you?

We chose Always Alive, because we considered that is the label it fits the best, given the melody and sound of the track.

When will you have your next release?

Pretty soon. We already sent it to the label and they were happy with it. We might play it first at Luminosity!

Be sure to grab your copy too, and support these guys’s work. Buy link: alwaysaliverecordings.lnk.to/ALWAYSA250.

Cosmic Gate releases Materia, the documentary and it is le-gen-da-ry!

Across two Chapters, 2017 saw Cosmic Gate release ‘Materia’ – the most significant and expansive album compendia in their long-playing history. Throughout key points of ‘Materia’s timeline, the ‘How’, ‘What’, ‘When’ and ‘Where’ of its coming-together was captured on film.

In ways intimate and surprising, inspiring, challenging and heartening, ‘Materia - The Documentary’ chronicles how the albums of ‘Materia’ were conceived, recorded and released - all related by the men who made them.

Shot on location at key events over the course of a musical year, the doc team shadowed the duo to Amsterdam for ADE, to Music Week in Miami, Belgium for Tomorrowland and on... It also drops in to more intimate ‘Materia’ tour shows, reaching celebrated venues including Ministry of Sound, London and LA’s Exchange.

Over its duration, Cosmic Gate provide the inside loop on their processes and methodology, whilst shedding new light on ‘Materia’s concept. Featuring behind-the-scenes material, it includes lesser-seen backstage footage, with Nic & Bossi sharing candid insights on how they manage the pressures of group and tour life. Contrastingly, the film also captures all the front-of-house thrill and thrall of the pair live, and in full flow. All naturally backed by the embryonic anthems of ‘Materia’.

On cam, Nic & Bossi also discuss moments from their earlier years and relate how events and inspirations - often unexpectedly - played their part in the shaping the albums’ music. The doc also delves into Cosmic Gate’s unique dynamic, exploring the synergy & second-nature-ism behind one of the most enduring partnerships in electronic music.

Intercut between are clips from many of Materia’s best known tracks, ‘AM2PM’, ‘Fall Into You’, ‘AR’, ‘Noom’ and ‘Dynamic’ among them. Through the documentary makers lens, you can get as up close and personal with its albums as it’s possible to get. Cosmic Gate’s ‘Materia’ movie is online now. Dock with the doc here: https://bit.ly/2srxSKz !!

New track: Jordan Suckley & Alex M.O.R.P.H. - Ambush [Vandit]

Jordan Suckley’s been in dynamic form for VANDIT of late. Only the other month he was in league with Sam Jones on ‘Pursuit’ and now - hot on its heels - comes the techy trappings of the equally ensnaring of ‘Ambush’. Jumping into the co-producer’s chair – and for the first time no less, it’s the inimitable Mr. Alex M.O.R.P.H. The collaboration dynamic might have changed, but the floor effects remain every bit as dramatic!

Drawing on metallic sounding percussion, marching drums and overwhelmingly danceable bass, ‘Ambush’ exerts substantial force from the off. A tongue-twisting sly side of Psy keep the gauges climbing, while roiling sub-riffs and boiler room atmospheres send its pressure higher still. Top of the drop and the pair unload a techy atom-splitter of mainline to fully spring ‘Ambush’s clubby trap.

‘Ambush is gonna getcha sooner or later! So get out in front of it here from today: beatport.com/release/ambush-extended/2292194.

Float. Breathe. Dream. John O'Callaghan & Stine Grove - Our Destiny is pure magic [Subculture]

Fire in his production belly, John O’Callaghan has already (per Mixmag) “explored his dark side” this year with ‘Next Stop Muddy Waters’ and fortified club floors further with the magnificent ‘Choice Of The Angels’. Into May - and again exhibiting his renowned flexibility to produce across trance’s broader span - the Irishman’s charting a vocal course.

For ‘Our Destiny’, John’s connected with Danish singer/songwriter Stine Grove to conceive a nothing-less-than-spellbinding new single.

This is pure magic. I am listening to it on repeat now and I feel so light. So airy. Everything is perfect in this track: From melody, to lyrics, to vocals. Everything. John can never disappoint  and Stine Grove always sounded amazing! Ripe with illustrative song writing, her voice animates every word, lending each line more significance than the last. Touching, enrapturing and stirring, it adds yet another new dimension to John’s productions.

Naturally ‘Our Destiny’ carries all the hallmark studio punch and floor clout you’ve come to expect from JOC. Reflecting the refined nature of its vocal though, his underlying intricacies serve the track equally. Long, drawn filmic strings, unhurried piano and more measured bass movements underscore its midsection, before uniting with its drums & mainline to bring the post-break altitude.

A track that exists as much for subtlety as strength, you can experience John & Stine’s ‘Our Destiny’ here from May 25: subculture.choons.at/ourdestiny

Kickstart the summer with Afterhills: more than 150 artists (18 trance), a ton of good music and a field full of dreamers.

Well, this it is. Afterhills is just around the corner. Only a couple of days till we kickstart this summer with 4 amazing days full of good music and beautiful people. Dreamers. 'Cuz this is the focus. Daydreaming of something perfect, night dreaming of goosebumps. They just announced the full line up and it is insane.

From the trance point of view we have a pretty interesting list and I want to see all the names:

1. Vini Vici (I really like the sets I enjoyed till now, looking forward for a new one)

2. David Gravell (I am a huge fan of him, not matter if he is on the right side of trance music or not, as some would say. I am in love with some of his reworks and I am sure I will enjoy his set 110%)

3. Blastoyz (Crazy craziness since I first heard of him. Really really good with what is he doing)

4. Aly & Fila (You cannot say trance without saying Aly & Fila too)

5. Sander Van Doorn (Happy he got back to trance music with his Purple Haze name and looking forward to see what he has prepared for Afterhills)

6. KhoMa (Never seen him playing. Want to experience the end of a great day with him behind the decks)

7. Paul Van Dyk (Paul is my first music crush, and nothing can stay between me and him when he is playing at an event I am attending)

8. Cosmic Gate (Music crush! Music crush alert! )

9. Ben Nicky (I've seen a lot of comments regarding his sets lately, I want to see it for myself too)

12. Andrew Rayel (I have a lot of good memories from his sets, looking forward to see what else he is doing right now)

New track: Markus Schulz & Jes - Calling For Love [Coldharbour Recordings]

Having just last month brought floors to full roar through the Emma Hewitt-sung ‘Safe From Harm’, Markus Schulz is poised with another epic first-time team-up.  This time Markus x JES is the equation, and if you’re wondering how that’s never have happened before, well the queue forms to the left! Analysis is now academic as two of trance’s greats bridge the studio/song gap with the soul-stirringly moving ‘Calling For Love’.

In its all-day-play radio version, first contact with ‘Calling’ came through April’s interlinked ‘In Bloom EP’ and GDJB show. For it’s standalone release, Markus has club-equipped the Extended Mix with all the necessaries to see it reign equally at night. Tapping the tempo gas, ‘Calling’s production’s been galvanised by hardier drums, hastening snares, percussive march and - in its latter stages - synth-radiance. By turns strong, optimistic, defiant, wrought and lamenting, JES’ song is a swirl of contending emotions, lyrically & vocally encapsulating her theme.

‘Calling For Love’s official video will shortly join fellow ‘In Bloom’ single ‘Safe From Harm’s (which passed the 1 million YouTube views marker last week) online. Meantime, you can stream/purchase the Extended Mix of ‘Calling For Love’ here: http://markusschulz.choons.at/callingforlove

27 artists. One stage. One trance stage. Untold Festival made a very special gift to the Romanian Trance Community

I am looking at the video, and I still can't believe it. I am looking at the announcement, and I still feel like dreaming. There will be a Trance stage at Untold festival, and this is the best announcement they could've make.

I went to Untold for their first edition to experience the festival, and they made a very good impression. In terms of organisation, artists, people, everything went magically. It was a very nice experience and I told all about it in a very long article here. I know the article is in Romanian, bear with me. At that time I wasn't writing for the whole world. Will translate it later. Long story short, the 1st edition of Untold for me was all about the music and beautiful people. Armin did the most for me at that time. He was above everything. I am not the biggest Armin fan, but kudos for what he did there. And the next years after that: his set got longer and longer with each Untold edition. I am sure you all played this at least one time:

Well, this year they thought on making trance fans from Romania even happier. They finally announced for this 4th edition a trance scene. After asking for it, crying for it, making campaign and petitions for it, it finally happened. They made it happen. And they announced one hell of a lineup. I tried to make a short list out of all of these names, but I couldn't. I want to see them all. I want to catch them all!

It was very difficult to pick one track for each of them to put it here. Can you gues each one I chose before clicking on their names?

  1. AIRWAVE (for being such an amazing classics man)
  2. ASTRAL PROJECTION (legends! True legends for what they did since 1993 for the electronic music field. Legends!)
  3. ATB (It will be nice to see him again. :D )
  4. BEN GOLD (because I never saw him live)
  5. BOGDAN VIX (because he is one of the pillars of the Trance Community in Romania. Also, he will have a mint set!)
  6. BRYAN KEARNEY (the man is mad behind the decks, and I am also a huge fan of his music)
  7. CHICANE (another legend. ^_^ )
  8. FERRY CORSTEN (even tough it is not a Gouryella set, I expect to magic either way)
  9. GABRIEL & DRESDEN (more legends!!!)
  10. GARETH EMERY (he knows how to please the crowd)
  11. JOHN 00 FLEMING (on the progressive trance fields, he is doing magic. Definitely one to listen, to follow, to have on repeat)
  12. KYAU & ALBERT (more and more legends!!!)
  13. MARCO V (I will repeat the word legend for every artist here. :D )
  14. MARK SHERRY (ohooooo the power of his sets, his music never disappointed me)
  15. MARKUS SCHULZ (he is part Romanian already. :D )
  16. MARLO (Seen him in Chisinau a couple of years ago, happy to see him again, in Romania this time)
  17. MENNO DE JONG (The man knows what trance is. In trance we definitely trust!)
  18. OMNIA (Never seen him live. But I am in love with his music)
  19. ORJAN NILSEN (The man know exactly what powerful electric sets mean)
  20. RICHARD DURAND (Recently I've been listening to a lot of his music again and fell in love once more with his work)
  21. RUBEN DE RONDE (say progressive. Say Ruben De Ronde. Definitely the man to kickstart a trance night)
  22. SIMON PATTERSON (Trance crush. Music crush. for a very long long time)
  23. SOLARSTONE (Trance crush. Pure trance crush. Music crush. Forever crush. This man knows music. I mean really knows the goosebumps music.)
  24. STANDERWICK (LIVE) (I've experienced his DJ sets, but never a live one. Looking forward to it)
  25. SUPER8 & TAB (Legendes. Legends. Legends.)
  26. THE THRILLSEEKERS (Legend. Again. I know. I am repeating myself. But this man is amazing.)
  27. WILL ATKINSON (Trance crush. Music crush. Forever crush. There is nothing more to say that he will "Numb the Pain" out of me. )

Long post again, but this line up is something we never had in Romania. So, imagine the happiness within the Romanian Trance Family. And not only I might mention. There is already a tradition for a lot of foreigners to visit Cluj only for the festival. And now, with this announcement I expect for more of them to come. I even tempted some of my friends with the line up yesterday.

For those interested I am leaving here a little bit more details about the event:
