Shine Ibiza has a new anthem by Paul Van Dyk and Alex M.O.R.P.H.
The whiff of sunscreen, the scent of surf, the hint of a mojito - close your eyes and you can almost smell it!! Yup - real terms, Ibiza’s right around that corner and for that you’ll be needing yourselves an anthem! Something equatorially-hot in places, evocatively flyaway in others and one that’s never, ever less than elevating?!
With summer on their mind, early April saw Paul van Dyk and label-mate/super-chum Alex M.O.R.P.H. whack up the thermostat and hotfoot it into the studio. Channeling their inner sun (wasn’t hard!), the pair co-created this year’s anthem for SHINE Ibiza’s soon-to-be season-long run at San Antonio’s legendary Eden.
Vibe-wise, this year’s hymn to the hot stuff (says DJ Mag in their May issue 8/10 review) was never going to skimp on temperate Balearic feelgoodery. Pads & chords have palpably cyanic accents, the rich mainline gives it its thermal lift, while its firmer bass conveys all the necessary floor-drive”, the mag continued, concluding “we’re looking at an anthem in both name and nature her.
A track that condenses all the elements of SHINE’s unforgettable experience into seven minutes and eighteen seconds of trance perfection, the night’s 2019 ‘Ibiza Anthem’ is here. The one you’ll hum as you (eventually) head back to the hotel, the track drops today and is available here (https://VanditRecords.lnk.to/ShineIbizaAnthem2019).

New Track: Betsie Larkin & White Zoo - Tidal Wave [Magic Muzik]
When you see Betsie Larkin, you know the track is a good one. And Tidal Wave makes no exception. Collaboration with White Zoo, this takes Betsie back to the release fore. Songs finished and new productions banked, with a literal wave of emotion she unleashes her first of the year.
A subtle-yet-devastating surge of soul-touch lyrics and heart-on-sleeve delivery, cut into an exceptional production, Betsie sends her ‘Tidal Wave’ your way now.
For its release she’s clubbed together with German boundary-pusher White Zoo, a producer who - through artist albums like ‘Into The White’ and ‘Zooperload’ – has himself generated waves aplenty.
Across its three mixes, he cuts ‘Tidal Wave’s musical cloth from housier fabric. Percussive loops sit atop substantial bass, as White Zoo checks its funk with cooler warping elements.
Betsie pushes the envelope again, allowing her delivery a darkly grooving, almost hypnotising feel. Revelatory lyrics unfold, adding the final edge to ‘Tidal Wave’s emotionally charged swell.
A track every bit as much for heads & hearts, as it is for clubbing feet, you can experience ‘Tidal Wave’ here:(https://magikmuzik.choons.at/tidalwave).

Vandit Next Generation: Paul Van Dyk celebrates 20 years of Vandit with a new imprint
Paul Van Dyk is a pioneer of the electronic music field. Even since he opened Vandit back in 1999, he lead the light in the DJ/producer-owned label revolution. If at first the label was about bringing international artists to the German market, Vandit became and remains a vital instrument in handling his own music as well.
Since the very beginning, the label gave exposure to artists like Zaxx, kickstarted careers like the ones of Giuseppe Ottaviani, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Josh Gabriel, Gareth Emery, Lange and many more. Since the release of "Another Way" / "Avenue", the label became and remained Paul's music always home.
Now, that the label celebrates its 20th operating year, Paul decided to take it to a next level and launch its very first sub-label.

“We’re two decades in to VANDIT, he says – and we felt this was the right juncture to make this distinction. We want to clearly define what - over time - have become the two distinct tracks our artists are on. Musically, those producers already established will remain on VANDIT’s mainline label. The talent that Team VANDIT’s spotted, or those beginning to make names for themselves will start their journey through us on Next Generation. Investment is the key to all our futures, so the team’s aim through VANDIT Next Generation is to nurture that next wave of trance producer and see them on the right course”.
The sublabel's releases will take place every 2 weeks on Wednesdays and the first ones will include material from Steve Dekay, Jamie Walker, Aerotek, Aimoon, Jan Miller, Mhammed El Alami & Alex Wright and Casey Rasch.
VANDIT Next Generation’s first single, ‘The Blooming Era’ from Colombia’s Steve Dekay, is out now. Full details of its early summer launch releases you can find below, which will be available through all good online retailers & streaming agents.
Upcoming releases:
- 24.04 VANX001 Steve Dekay – ‘The Blooming Era’
- 08.05 VANX002 Jamie Walker – ‘Fly Away’
- 22.05 VANX003 Aerotek – ‘Dystopia Is My Utopia’
- 05.06 VANX004 Aimoon – ‘Dream Stream’
- 19.06 VANX005 Jan Miller – ‘Sweets’
- 03.07 VANX006 Mhammed El Alami & Alex Wright – ‘L’esprit’
- 19.07 VANX007 Casey Rasch – ‘Forget About it’
Good move from the Trance MASTER and I really like seeing big names supporting new (or smaller) artists. Of you think you have what it takes, send your demo to them and maybe, you'll get the release you've been looking for for your track. Good luck!

OUT NOW: VII Solo Vol. I - Mixed by Simon Patterson
Ohh well... After the amazing success with their first ever compilation, VII returned with a new pack of goodies: VII Solo Vol. I - mixed by the one and only Simon Patterson.
VII's magic lies into the concentration on the music of 7 artists. This very exclusive group, gathered in one place some of trance's cooler and more underground-respected names. This year, they chose to continue the compilation awesomeness with the Solo series (that "vol.I" makes me hope on more).
At the top of his game for a decade +, Simon Patterson inimitable sonic ethic needs little by way of introduction. A powder keg composite of psy, tech & acid, astutely synthesized with elements of the uplifting & the vocal, its formulation has been crafted over time. It’s one that since has made him as audibly identifiable as any DJ currently spinning within the genre.
To ‘Solo Vol.1’s twin discs, Patterson brings that identity with renewed vengeance. Showcasing forty tracks (eighteen of which will only ever be available through this collection), it’s as defining as mixcomps come. Featuring masses of soundware from VII’s seven (Avalon, John Askew, Will Atkinson, Sean Tyas and Alex Di Stefano among them), there’s naturally also a wealth from Patterson, himself. Around the side you’ll find club ordinance from Astrix, Greg Downey, Sam Jones, Activa, Vertical Mode, UDM, Amir Hussain, David Forbes and others, uniting music on an album that doesn’t so much open the door to the clubbing spring, as boot it wide.

Musically, Patterson will always take you up the mountain. This trip though was never going to start in the foothills. When a music comp calibrates with Astrix & Freedom Fighters’ neo-classic psy-fry ‘Burning Stones’, notice has been fully served. At head-spinning speed you’ll be staring down the barrel of Greg Downey take on Sunscreem’s ‘Perfect Motion’, Amir Hussain’s really very naughty ‘Nefarious’ and Beatman/Ludmilla’s reckoning of Dogzilla classic, ‘Your Eyes’. Crossing the midpoint, Simon ups the charge again with EverLight’s electrifying ‘Slippery Business’, some ‘Found My Silence’-type elevation from Activa and Sean Tyas’ Beatport assaulting ‘Chrome’. With ‘Shining Through’, Magnus beats the final path to disc one’s summit, before Simon plants the flag square with his and John Askew’s ‘Iridescent’.
Between ‘Solo Vol.1’s two mixes there’s no ‘big bomb/not quite so big bomb’. That’s put into the clearest of perspectives as Simon goes headlong into its second disc with his spin on Astrix’s ‘Take A Shot’. UCast’s floor-shifting ‘Motive’ and ‘Blink’ - Patterson’s fifth outing with semi-muse Lucy Pullin are hot on its heels. Not dropping but a bar of pressure, Simon uses the mix’s median to infuse it with a judicious measure of vocal elements. Richard Durand’s forceful revision of Greg Downey & Bo Bruce’s ‘These Hands I Hold’ gets an airing, as does Will Atkinson’s chart-topping rework of JES’s ‘Imagination’. Bringing mix matters to the near vertiginous apexes are Activa & Simon Bostock’s ‘Contour’, ‘Rocket Punch’ from Jordan Suckley (rewhipped by Alex Di Stefano) and Simon’s own purpose-built & album eponymous, ‘Solo’. A dazzling compilation that showcases Simon Patterson’s exceptional ethics to the nth degree, ‘Solo Vol.1’ mainlines April 5. Grab your copy: https://vii.choons.at/solovol1

JOOF Editions Vol. 5 [ John 00 Fleming, Gai Barone, Paul Thomas & Tim Penner]
+ LAUNCH PARTY @ BRIGHTON’S THE ARCH 21.04.19 WITH JOOF, HERNAN CATTANEO & PAUL THOMAS
Launched on April 1st and this is not a joke. Not even remotely. JOOF Editions Vol. 5, mixed by John 00 Fleming, Gai Barone, Paul Thomas & Tim Penner is here to turn your world upside down.
“A decision was made to shake things up. Once that was done, says John 00 Fleming, that change took on a life of its own. // Originally I was just going to bring in one other, but amazing co-mixing suggestions kept coming up. Those suggestions turned into options and, well, here we are!”
Volumes 1 to 4 were amazing and nothing less than odysseys into the fantastic world of progressive. Volume 5, having 4 times more DJs mixing it allowed for the album to become a far more focussed affair and something I never expected. With the series’ door opened to a cadre of label friends and fellow defenders of the electronic music underground, joining him in 2019 are Gai Barone, Paul Thomas and Tim Penner.
“It’s very much the best of all worlds, John feels. It’s allowed me to become even more focussed on a couple of bandwidths, while my co-mixers travel their own lanes, broadening the release as a whole”.

Fleming’s fifth is the perfect truncation of the JOOF Editions’ you know and love. Its wonderful spacey intro calcifies swiftly into a chunkier, more groove-hardy thing. Incorporating housier undertones along the way, Basil O'Glue’s ‘Nekyia’ and - in its Facade variation - ‘Shrine’ sit alongside Stan Kolev’s ‘Ananda’. Delivering one stunning, toughly percussive and echoically-intense sequence after another, it culminates with ‘Arise’ and ‘Timelapse’ – a double hit from Jerome Isma-Ae.
At the midpoint, John’s mix traverses subtlety but unmistakable onto darker, more robust terra. JOOF’s own ‘Drop From The Vile’ and Miika Kuisma’s ‘Tri-be’ shadow Airwave’s ‘Perth To San Diego’, themselves prefacing a dozen other killers. Mix-matters come to the most anthemic of heads through Oliver Prime’s envisioning of LSG’s ‘Netherworld’.
The first of JOOF’s ‘Editions’ guest-mixers is the suddenly-everywhere Canadian, Tim Penner. A man with a notable passion for progressive’s more abstract and avant-garde natures, Tim’s delivers a ceaselessly fascinating two hours of music. Needlework-fine in its mixing, precisely nuanced and exploratory in the sonics, it courses with the latest soundware from The Stupid Experts, Rick Pier O'Neil, ACUMEN, Be Morais and others. Alongside, naturally, is a respectively significant dose of Penner’s own material, sourced from his just-released ‘Radio Silence’ album. Bringing Tim on board, John said: “Once in each decade you come across a genius of a producer. One that is so far forward thinking you’re unsure where to place them in the genre sphere. That’s Tim Penner in a nutshell”.

“No introduction necessary!” however is how John heralds ‘Editions 5’s next-to-the-decks. (Heck, he’ll give him one anyway!). “Gai Barone is a producer who - from Sasha to Armin van Buuren, exists outside every bubble. His hypnotic melodies have become irresistible to every music lover. Its not just talent either, Gai is one of the loveliest most humble artists on this planet.” In his quest to do justice to the Editions’ remap, the Italian’s gone to some extraordinary lengths. An album capsule perched atop a mix-comp rocket, whether it be original or remix, Gai’s had a hand in no less than 14 of the 17 tracks in his mix. Aliases too? You betcha. Charlotte Petitte, Dead Panther, Tannura Revolutionary Blocks, Celvee, Ayer Astura, Barra Uno – all extraordinary, all new Barone masks and monikers.

Last and by no means least is moonlighting FSOE UV A&R man, Paul Thomas. Welcoming Paul, John says: “The latest new breed rising over the past couple of years getting on the radar of the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren along with touching a chord with the Trance world too, says John. One of the standout Progressive DJ/Producers over the past few years”, Paul Thomas angles his mix a touch later-night than his co-mixers. Elevating its tempo, through key tracks like Dmitry Molosh’s ‘Sacra’, Molosh’s rewire of Aly & Fila vs. Ferry Corsten’s ‘Camellia’ and Paul’s own ‘Joheia’ & ‘Lorax’ numbers, he brings greater emphasis to melodica, lift and endzone drive.

Fleming. Barone. Thomas. Penner. The men behind the only progressive compilation anyone’s gonna need this year!?? Well that’s for you to tell us! All eight hours of it dropped this month. You can order it here: https://www.beatport.com/release/joof-editions-vol-5/2525428
// To celebrate the release of the fifth ‘JOOF Editions’, John’s taking it back to where it all began. On April 21 at The Arch in his hometown Brighton, Hernan Cattaneo, co-mixer Paul Thomas and John himself will toast the album’s arrival. A rare chance to see the globe-circling DJ in his native environment and an even rarer opportunity to see Argentina’s greatest musical export outside the UK’s capital - this (literally!) is not to be taken sitting down. Easter Sunday, The Arch, Brighton.

Eargasm goals: Jes - Imagination with the Will Atkinson touch
Jes - Imagination (Will Atkinson remix) was out on February 22 and now is sitting very nicely as no. 1 in Beatport's Trance Top 100. The remix is out for days, but my soul has finally cooled off to write about it. If I was to write on the release day, you would have read a novel.
Jes's voice will always be through one of my favorites in the trance scene and Will Atkinson is one of the best in the scene. When there is a combination of these 2, you cannot expect anything else than perfection. This remix is a very serious contender for Tune of the Year. And I am not the only one to say it.
This remix is eargasm goals. It has everything it needs to be in every playlist in the world and for us to abuse that repeat button. :) It is love at first listen. It is driving, energetic, magic!
I can tell in your eyes, while listening to this, where you go, 'cause I have been to each state you are in now too. I know it's like a trip, maybe to me, a trip too far, moving forward, faster into my imagination, but let it run away with me.
Imagination is in our hearts since 2008, and it was remixed by Tiesto, Kaskade and others too. But if you ask me, no one did it better than Atkinson.
Letting JES’s ‘Imagination’ run away with him, over nine minutes Will’s rework takes it to any number of new dimensions. Rolling JES’s opening refrains over crisp breaks and then capitalising with 4/4 beats, he brings in a beast of a b-line and an irresistible riptide of surging sub-riffs. Will then deftly clicks it over into a thumping progressive tract, allowing - through pathos-soaked pads, synths and endless FX detail, that emotion to swell.
Finally - right when you think it’s topped out and hasn’t anymore road to run, he stunningly upscales again. With a break picked out by authentic guitars strains and heart-seeking chime, Will finally eclipses all with the kind of mainline uplift your night simply won’t recover from.
Make sure to grab your copy here: https://magikmuzik.choons.at/imaginationremix.
Track also did awesome at ASOT 900 Utrecht the other weeks and Will perfectly illustrates the feels after in his latest video:

COSMIC GATE & FORÊT - Need to Feel Loved [Wake Your Mind Records]
NEXT VANGUARD RELEASE FROM UPCOMING ‘FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER’ ALBUM DROPS // PHASE-2 DATES FOR 20 YEARS TOUR ANNOUNCED
The closing days of 2018 saw Cosmic Gate break news of sweeping plans to commemorate 20 years of artistic partnership. Now, following Ilan Bluestone’s reworking of the Emma Hewitt-sung classic ‘Be Your Sound’, Cosmic Gate deliver their next LP trailblazer.
Occupying a singular place in the genre’s history, ‘Need To Feel Loved’ is the trance anthem that was never meant to be. Caught between the emphatic prog house intentions of its producers and a trance remix that supercharged it to classic status, it was released on the cusp of an evolutionary moment in Cosmic Gate’s history.
Bossi from the group elaborates: “the release of the original ran in almost complete parallel with a time our sound was undergoing its first significant change. During pre-production on ‘Earth Mover’, the depth and emotional complexity of ‘Need To Feel Loved’ was highly influential on Nic & I.
For their interpretation Cosmic Gate spent many an hour forensically re-exploring what made ‘Need To Feel Loved’ so unique.
“What was most important to us in reinterpreting it, says Nic Chagall, was that we didn’t retrace any musical ground already covered. What we’ve come up with gives us the perfect new version to play on the 20 years tour!”
Their mix brings drum, percussion & depth charge bass, which prefaces its deliberately elegiac pianoforte and Thomas Newman’s almost impossibly moving Road To Perdition strings. Break-side it equalises with trance synth shimmer, LFO-generated sub riffs and the heartfelt chime of its mainline.
To do full and complete justice to their version, an extraordinary vocal from a singer of singular and very specific tone was required. The search ended in Holland at the door of Forêt. The very epitome of ‘bittersweet’, her quiet implore, mixed with the unending reach of her delivery swings an emotional wrecking ball through the track’s heart.
The next piece of Cosmic Gate’s 20 years celebrations (more info on which here https://cosmic-gate.de/article/20-years-new-album-tour/) is in place and ready to stream/purchase here https://wym.choons.at/needtofeelloved. Having already touched Australia, phase-2 dates for the 20 Years tour, which continues through to the early summer, have just been announced. They’ll see Cosmic Gate make a return to Ultra in Miami, alongside much requested dates in New York, London, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. Full details and tickets available here (https://cosmic-gate.de/tour-dates/).

DRIFTMOON - REMEMBER THE NIGHT [RECORDED LIVE AT EPIC]
“Yep, there’s always gotta be something unique in there!” chuckles Juraj Klička. Generally speaking Driftmoon’s passing comment on his approach to albums. More specifically though it’s about ‘Remember The Night’ - his just-announced third collection. “It’s a crowded field, he says of the format, so to me, they have to have something that will set them apart.” Bringing USPs to his longplayers is something the Prague native’s developed a track record for. With its hybrid orchestration, his first (‘R(E)volution’) connected the worlds of electronic and classical music. Last summer’s ‘Invitcus’ meanwhile upped the ‘original’ ante further, with its half music/half audiobook concept lingering long in the memory.
Now - in full album stride, Juraj is at it again. ‘Remember The Night’, which arrives this March, approaches from another remarkably different angle. “If they happen at all, he says, live album performances tend to be the ‘what comes after’. The one that follows the classic studio album release. Here though I wanted the live experience to be people’s first connection with it. It’s called ‘club music’ after all, so let’s introduce it that way!”

No coincidence admittedly, but Juraj was well positioned to make that happen. Evermore over the last ten years, the Czech capital’s Epic club has become a bucket-list essential for music lovers from Europe and far, far beyond. As Epic DJ resident, the club provided the optimum platform for Juraj to mount a live rendition of the album.
Further, its occasion allowed Driftmoon to bring in another aspect that’s long held his interest. “I’m as fascinated as the next person by the link between memories and music - possibly even more so. Even before I was a DJ or producer I was aware that every remarkable moment in my life – happy or otherwise – somehow had a piece of music ‘attached’ to it. I guess one of every musician’s wishes is to be behind a track that leaves that type of impact. So between writing this album and its first performance, it became something of a mission to try and hit that. How it works out, well only time will tell!”
Of the performance itself though, Juraj admits to having some pre-show butterflies. “When you’re doing a DJ set, you work on the premise that a percentage of the crowd will be familiar with a percentage of the tracks. Here, I was working on the absolute knowledge that none of the audience would know any of the tracks! I think when we’re feeling emotional extremes, our receptors are that much more open. Memories consequently become even more intense. I think the audience at Epic really tapped into that and – as you can hear on the album - got swept up in the night!”
Alongside ‘Remember The Night’s solo moments, Driftmoon did call on some particular close chums and musical confidants to collaborate on its creation. Subsequently it came to include music made with Robert Nickson (under the duo’s Astrosphere moniker), Ferry Tayle and Ahmed Romel. Further, its also became a platform for a long overdue studio return for Paul ‘Re:Locate’ Moelands, as well as a pairing with much-revered studio savant, Geert Huinink.
Recorded live at Epic, ‘Remember The Night’ is released March 1. It’s available to stream/purchase here: https://blackhole.choons.at/remember

SHINE IBIZA REVEALS SEASON 2 DATES & LINE UP
PVD-HEADLINED IBIZA NIGHT FLIES IN HOST OF TRANCE HEAT FOR 2019’s 11 SHOW RUN. ALY & FILA, COSMIC GATE, GIUSEPPE OTTAVIANI, ALEX M.O.R.P.H., JOHN O’CALLAGHAN, JOHN 00 FLEMING, BRYAN KEARNEY AND JORDAN SUCKLEY AMONGST THOSE SET TO APPEAR
If you happened to be looking in the other direction throughout January, let us catch you up! Events on Planet SHINE have been running - fair to say – plenty hot over the first month of the year. Assumed - and subsequently confirmed - the White Isle breakout is returning for the summer of 2019. For its second season run, word of a venue uptick got out, taking SHINE to its own space at the legendary Eden. From there things started to get a little crazy. Having been on the circuit for but a single season, SHINE’s owners dropped word of a partnership with none other than Tomorrowland, which – come July 20 - will see the marque takeover Freedom - the festival’s second biggest stage.
And today SHINE are delighted to share the entire roll call of DJs that’ll be joining them on the island this year. With PvD’s Ibiza performances clicking back into the traditional #TRANCETHURSDAYS groove, SHINE has once again placed max emphasis on crowd-drawing spinners who embody the truest form of the genre.
Goes without saying that Paul will headline each of the nights and the first month’s worth of shows alone will see him joined by the likes of Bryan Kearney, John O’Callaghan, Jordan Suckley and Giuseppe Ottaviani. Aly & Fila (who’ll SHINE six times over the summer’s duration!) will be doing an XL set on July 11’s opening night. As Ibiza shifts into high season, Cosmic Gate, Alex MORPH, John 00 Fleming, Grum and others will be over to play their part too. Events come to a head on September 19, with SHINE’s co-headliners Paul van Dyk and Aly & Fila both delivering summer summating 3hr sets for its closing party. Every date & every DJ below. Could be time to call the travel agent.

Previously: reflecting on their first season and looking forward to the one ahead, SHINE ambassador Paul van Dyk said: “SHINE brought a breath of fresh air to Ibiza in 2018. To break out and do something new and under our own steam was a wonderfully liberating experience for myself personally and, I think, all involved. The team was right, the vibe was right and the DJs SHINE brought in to play were second to none. Trance and its global family were back on the island in its truest form. That all showed in the reception the night received.
On my last trip to Ibiza this year I dropped into the recently fully redeveloped Eden. I was blown away to see how the venue was modernized and refined. I’ve played the best and most exciting venues in the world and the new Eden is exactly that. Alongside San Antonio’s continuing regeneration, I am sure SHINE will host a world-class 2019 production there. Trance and Eden have a close relationship/shared history that goes back decades. In tandem with the desire to have the night back on Thursdays, I’m delighted to say that SHINE will be moving to the club for the upcoming 2019 season.”
Of the night’s move to Eden, the club said: “We are delighted to be hosting SHINE Ibiza for the first time in San Antonio. We are dedicated to offering a diverse range of club nights to our Ibiza crowd. We can think of no better team to bring Trance to Eden than with legendary Paul van Dyk and the SHINE family for 2019”.
SHINE promoter and MD of The Supernova Group Nick Ferguson echoed that, saying: “We are very excited by the opportunity to move SHINE to Eden for the 2019 season. The club has recently experienced a fantastic redevelopment and resurgence, as has San Antonio. Eden is well run, by people that believe in trance and are passionate about working with an exciting new brand!”

Another dimension: Tim Penner - Radio Silence [ J00F Recordings]
Since his first radar appearance back in 2014, he’s released deeper sided cuts on Slideways, JOOF, Cycles, and a half dozen other prominent labels. Lauded by DJs who themselves enjoy multi-genre appeal, he’s become one of the most discussed music makers in his area. That ‘area’ specifically though depends on who you’re talking to. Some have him down as ‘the deep trance guy’. Others ‘progressive’, ‘deep house’ or to some, anything with ‘tech’ in its title. Tim, himself, doesn’t express. However at the musical crossroads of John Digweed, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, John Fleming and Max Graham lies the crux of it.
To date a singles-focussed producer, the onset of 2019 will see the debut of Tim’s first mass body of work. Tightly curated and (by virtue of) a perfectly formed album compact, it’s time for ‘Radio Silence’.
Seeing electronic music in a non-linear/non-binary form, Tim doesn’t address it from the same standpoint as you or I. Thus this is an album not about progression, but dimension (or indeed dimensions plural). ‘Radio Silence’ doesn’t play out in a building ‘mix-comp’ fashion. Anything but. To expect its first track to be its darkest or its last the lightest/clubbiest will quickly false foot you. If one track has a stronger techno bias, the next will have a markedly different composite - and an un-anticipatable one at that. Comparably it’s also never dark for the sake of being ‘moody’ or ‘cool’, or light simply to provide respite. When tonal contrasts occur, they’re incidental - part of the album’s bigger picture/broader experience.
Stepping in, Tim would have you see every track as being largely the same, albeit assembled in a different dimension. The result is a higher thinking, expertly established electronic music trip. Conclusions on it are the individual listeners alone to draw. There’s no predestined path. Be in no doubt though, everyone’s going to be walking away with an opinion.
Using the radio dial as a mechanic (which gives certain sections an ethereally retro futuristic feel) the album station-surfs through its numbers. ‘Radio Silence’s frequencies don’t oscillate wildly, but remain in a constant state of flux. Throughout you’ll find everything from the filmic to the dramatic, the clandestine to the kaleidoscopic and the edgy to the aquiline. Eclectic FX, 303 and industrialism echo in one track, supplanted by galactic & otherworldly sounds/sequences in the next. Some tracks draw notably on sonic references from decades past. Others have no frame of reference other than the here & now.
Of the album’s avant-garde approach, Tim says: “the story I had in mind stems from the concept of reaching new dimensions. The first song depicts static and a vintage radio. This radio ultimately ends up being the vessel to transport the user to new times and places. Each song really represents a different dimension. As the listeners travels to the end of the album, they have potentially reached a place of awakening and rebirth (its closing tracks)”. Tim goes further into its mechanics on the album’s creation on ‘Radio Silence’s trailer video, which you can watch here (https://youtu.be/uZm2iEiSVdU)
Tim Penner’s against-the-grain album debut ‘Radio Silence’ is released through JOOF Recordings on February 11 (pre-orderable through Beatport here https://www.beatport.com/release/radio-silence/2489695). Life may one day be the same again. Won’t be anytime soon though.
